The island was discovered and named by the Portuguese navigator Juao de Nova Castella in 1502. The dutch occupied the island tempoarily between 1645 an 1651. The original European settlement was founded by representatives of the British East India Company sent to annex the island after the departure of the Dutch. The Dutch recaptured the island in 1673 but were ejected by a British force under Sir Richard Munden. Since then St Helena has been a British possession. The island has been used as the place of exile for Napoleon Bonaparte, several Zulu chiefs and an ex-sultan of Zanzibar. This coin is essentially the only coin issued for the island up till 1834.
