Liberia, 1847, first coinage, one cent, incuse lettering. Liberia was first settled in modern times by the American Colonisation Society as a homeland for American freed slaves. The US government gave funds and assisted in negotiations for precurement of land from native chiefs. The various settlements united in 1839 to form the Commonwealth of Liberia, and in 1847 established the country as a republic with a constitution modelled on the USA. CC Ref # LIB-1, VF
